Opal Lafern “Fern” Utter
Opal Lafern “Fern” Utter, 93, of Wheaton, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2019, at Mount Vernon Place Care Center in Mt. Vernon.
She was born March 8, 1926, in Greenwood, Ark., the daughter of Martin Asbury Beam and Gladys Opal Utter. On Nov. 10, 1947, in Joplin, she was united in marriage to George Corneilius Utter, who preceded her in death on April 7, 2014. Also preceding her in death were her parents; one daughter, Gloria Anne and two brothers, Kenneth Martin Beam and William Lee Beam.
Survivors include: one son, Carmen Wesley Utter and his wife Teresa of Wheaton; two daughters, Faith Dutra and her husband Ed of Mannford, Okla., and Aleta Motes and her husband Russell of Everton; one brother, Charles D Beam of Helena, Ala.; one sister, Letha Marie Blythe of Portland, Ore.; one sister-in-law, Mavis Beam of Lee, Mass.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
She attended school for a few months in Cleora, Okla., before moving to Wheaton, where she graduated from high school. She attended certified nurse’s aide and med tech school in Monett.
For many years, she taught Bible classes and was very active with Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. For 3 and one half years, she worked as a certified nurse’s aide at Barry County Nursing Home. She was a member of Wheaton Church of Christ.
Services were held Tuesday at McQueen Funeral Home in Wheaton.
Steve Spillman conducted the services. Burial was at Muncie Chapel Cemetery in Wheaton.
