Exeter comes up short in district title

For the second consecutive year, the Exeter baseball team saw its season end in the championship of the district tournament.

Verona claimed the Class 1, District 5 crown with a 12-2 victory over the Tigers on May 15.

“I liked how this team finished strong this year,” said Matt Tripp, Exeter coach. “We started the season 5-0, and then the wheels came off and we had some growing pains. But instead of quitting and giving up, these guys fought back and got to this game. That’s what we can focus on. We were playing our best at the end.”

Verona jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Exeter battled back in the third with singles by Jacob Foster and Jared Alverson. Both would score on Wildcat errors.

However, the team was unable to sustain the momentum, and Verona took control of the game with five runs in the bottom of the third and three more in the fourth.

As Exeter looks toward its offseason, Tripp has laid out a plan for the squad to improve with six returning players.

“The offseason is the key,” Tripp said. “I need more commitment out of our players to have a full summer workout and fall season. I feel that if we get that commitment, then next year, we aren’t looking at our season ending at this stage.”
