Cassville runners fine-tuning this week

The Cassville boys and girls track teams each placed second in the Wildcats’ home meet last week.

The Lady Wildcats continued an impressive string of four consecutive top two finishes this season.

“I think there are two factors that have worked in our favor,” said Tom Hubbard, Cassville coach. “First is the quality of athletes we have, and second, the fact we have depth. We have no seniors on this squad, and our girls, especially the freshmen, have picked up the scoring slack.”

This marks the final week before the Big 8 Conference meet and district competition.

Hubbard admits the squad has some fine-tuning to do before next week, but also, the squad has yet to show its full potential.

“In our relays, we have played around and mixed and matched all season,” Hubbard said. “We haven’t necessarily put our best runners together for each event. Our goal has been to score points and not necessarily focus just on speed.”

For the Lady Wildcats to continue with their impressive run of top finishes, Hubbard believes that the points needed to accomplish that goal will be forced to come from the relay events.

“There are several schools with good sprinters,” Hubbard said. “Kyren [Postlewait] is an exceptionally fast runner, but she may not medal at the conference meet. That’s not a putdown to Kyren, just a testament to how stacked the Big 8 Conference is right now. It is going to be fun to watch the sprinters go. In the 4x100 and 4x200 relays, it is the same way. Our field events have scored a ton of points this year and we’ll need them to again if we want a top finish.”
