For three years, Cassville senior Katie Stockton has been a cheerleader, and the now-captain of the cheer squad was one of five cheerleaders chosen as All-American to march in a national parade.

Stockton said she attends the UCA varsity summer cheer camp every year. The camp this year was held in the Cassville High School FEMA building.

“From camp, you try out to be All-American,” Stockton said. “Whoever they choose to be All-American gets the opportunity to travel and cheer.”

Stockton said one of the varsity staff come down to the camp.

“We spend three days at camp and you have to get a sticker from the varsity staff to be able to try out for All-American,” Stockton said. “Then, you try out with the staff member to see if you make All-American.”

Stockton said her entire UCA team tried out, and five of them made it to go to different parades.

“You have to consistently work hard and show the UCA varsity staff that you want to try out for it,” Stockton said.

Stockton said she and her family went to Orlando where she had a few practice days with the UCA varsity staff, and on Thanksgiving day, she marched in the big Thanksgiving day parade at Disney World.

“I got to spend a total of four days in Orlando,” Stockton said. “My family was able to go to Orlando with me, so even though I did march in the parade, we did get to spend time together and have a mini vacation.”

According to Stockton after she graduates, if she ends up going to the College of the Ozarks, she is going to try out for their cheer and stunt team.

“I am interested in being a show choir director, and my background with cheer really helps with that,” Stockton said. “My parents are a huge part of my support system and are always there for me.”
