48-year-old never registered after 1997 release from prison

A Barry County man has been charged for failing to register as a sex offender after being released from prison more than 20 years ago.

Charles Paternostro, 48, of Barry County, specific address unknown, is facing the class D felony and being held on a $15,000 bond.

According to a probable cause statement filed by Angela Cole, deputy with the Barry County Sheriff’s Office, Paternostro was released from prison in August 1997, saying he would reside in Barry County.

He was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse of a victim under the age of 15 in Lawrence County on April 12, 1994, and sexual assault of a victim the same age in Newton County on April 18, 1994.

According to the statement, Paternostro never registered with the Barry County Sheriff’s Office following his release on Aug. 22, 1997.

He is being held in the Barry County jail on the $15,000 bond and has been arraigned. A disposition hearing was set for Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. in the courtroom of Judge Robert Foulke.
