Meteor visible in Cassville
Event visible across a dozen surrounding states
Anyone looking east from Cassville Friday night just after 7 p.m. saw something unusual — a meteor.
According to the American Meteor Society, there were 375 reports of a fireball at about 7:25 p.m. According to a post on www.amsmeteors.org, fireball was seen primarily from Missouri, but was also seen from Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. The International Meteor Organization also received 379 reports from the same states.
The event created a stir at the Cassville football game, as it occurred shortly after a Wildcats touchdown, leading some to believe it may have been a faulty firework.
A preliminary 3D trajectory done by the Society showed the fireball was traveling from northeast to southwest, with visibility beginning somewhere around Willow Springs and the fireball ending its flight near Bradleyville.
It is not clear if there was any impact or if the meteor burned completely on entry.
