Ford truck hits bus head-on southwest of Crane

A Crane man died Tuesday in a wreck at 4:20 p.m. on Highway 248, five miles southwest of Crane.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Kelly Vaught, 47, of Crane, was driving a 2004 Ford F150 eastbound when his vehicle struck head-on a 2001 International IC school bus, being driven by Paul Schlis, 57, of Galena.

Vaught was pronounced dead by Barry County Coroner Jim Fohn at 5 p.m. Schlis was not injured.

Four youth suffered minor injuries in the wreck. Callie Branstette, 9, of Aurora, and Page Price, 16, of Aurora, were transported to Cox Monett Hospital. Jayson Yerge, 8, of Aurora, an Rylee Yerge, 11, of Aurora, were transported to Mercy Hospital in Cassville.

Vaught was not wearing a safety device, and Schlis was wearing one. Both vehicles were totaled.

This is the 87th fatal wreck of the year for Troop D of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, which covers 18 counties in southwest Missouri, including Barry.
