Wildcats provide thunder, lightning in rainy win over Monett
Cassville retains Barry County Brawl trophy for second consecutive year
MONETT — A steady rain blanketed Burl Fowler Stadium Friday, but all the thunder and lightning was provided by Cassville in a 49-12 win over Monett to keep the Barry County Brawl trophy for a second straight year.
Cassville started off the game with some defensive thunder, turning a Monett 35-yard gain into a fumble recovery going the Wildcats’ way.
Cassville then struck with lightning on the ground when Bowen Preddy took an option toss out left and streaked 60 yards to the end zone only 1:45 into the game.
The Cubs had an answer early. Monett’s Jamie Guinn swept to the right and burned the Wildcats’ defense for an 83-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 7-6 after a missed PAT.
After trading punts, Cassville slowed the game down, embarking on a 12-play, 65-yard drive culminating in a 4-yard touchdown run by Preddy. The Wildcats kept the pressure on with a 5-yard Anthony Tolbert touchdown run, then a 46-yard touchdown run by Shannon Haney and a 25-yard Drake Reese field goal.
Monett added another score to give the Wildcats a 29-12 lead at intermission.
Following the break, Zack Coenen got in on the action, breaking a 47-yard touchdown run to push the lead out to four scores. Haney added a 5-yard scamper to provide a 43-12 lead.
The pressure flustered Monett, and after two fumbled snaps, the Wildcats blocked a Monett punt and Coenen tucked in a 12-yard run to paydirt to force the turbo clock with 1:38 left in the third quarter and provide the final scoreline.
