Cassville man charged in pepper spray incident
Suspect said he was afraid victim would attack him with LSD
A Cassville man had been charged with one felony and a misdemeanor after allegedly pepper spraying a victim at an apartment in Cassville.
Craig Bateman, 44, of Cassville, is charged with third-degree assault and misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child.
According to a probable cause statement filed by Jeremy Thomas, officer with the Cassville Police Department, on Aug. 10 at about 9:25 p.m., police were dispatched to an assault on Townsend Street.
Upon arrival, Thomas said a victim was located on the ground and in a great deal of pain, and another witness said the victim had been pepper sprayed. A child had also been hit with the pepper spray on the side of the face and neck. Both victims were treated on the scene by EMS.
Thomas said he located Batemanís residence and attempted to make contact several times with no answer. A Barry County deputy arrived to assist and the deputy made contact with Bateman, who allegedly admitted to pepper spraying the victim, saying he was afraid the victim was going to attack him with LSD.
Bateman is being held in the Barry County jail on a cash-only bond of $5,000. He has been arraigned, and a disposition hearing is set for Aug. 23 at 8:30 a.m. in the courtroom of Judge Robert Foulke.
