Eagle Rock thrift store hosting event on Aug. 4

For several years prior to the opening of the Community Connection thrift store in Eagle Rock, the Eagle Rock Community Association was funded by Bingo.

When Bingo was popular, the Eagle Rock Community Association prospered. Then, in the 1990s and early 2000s interest declined, and attendance plummeted. The Association board voted to discontinue Bingo and close the association due to lack of funding. Sometimes, desperation inspires new beginnings.

The Community Connection Thrift Store opened its doors on Aug. 1, 2008. The store is the life line of the Eagle Rock Community Association, and its motto is “for the community by the community.”

“This is true in every sense of the word as the business is non-profit and operated totally by volunteers with no paid employees,” said Susan Crownover, Association president. “The thrift store has always been locally owned and operated. Our volunteers are the backbone of the operation. The heart of the store is the donations made by area residents. We are blessed to be the recipients of donations from all over our area. Many of our donors live elsewhere and own summer or weekend homes locally.”

All of the money earned by the store stays in Eagle Rock and goes back into the community. The Association contributes to:

• Helping Hands Food Pantry

• Eagle Rock – Golden – Mano Fire Department relief fund

• Eagle Rock Library and Friends of the Library including the summer reading program

• Eagle Rock monthly LEGO Club

• Local Fall Dinner

• Eagle Rock Car Show

“We also sponsor four $500 scholarships to area graduating seniors and occasionally to a home schooled senior,” Crownover said. “We have served our community well and hope to continue far into the future. We have the best volunteers and customers ever. Thank you all. Now you can understand why we proudly say that you can feel good about donating or shopping with us.”

People may visit Community Connection on Aug. 4 to help celebrate the 10-year anniversary. Community Connection is located at 28750 St. Hwy. P in Eagle Rock. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday thru Friday, and 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
