Nadean (Bennett) Merritt

Nadean (Bennett) Merritt, 89, of Purdy, Mo., passed away Friday, July 6, 2018.

She was born on May 13, 1929, to Ralph and Mary (Hankins) Bennett in Purdy. Since her mother passed away when she was a baby, she was raised by her grandparents, Charles and Sara Ellen Bennett. Nadean lived all her life in the Purdy area. She graduated from Purdy High School in 1947 and then from Monett Junior College in 1949. She then attended Drury College and later graduated from Southwest Missouri State in Springfield, now known as Missouri State University. Nadean taught school for two years at Prairie View School, a one room school that later consolidated to Pierce City. She then taught at Purdy for 31 years, retiring in 1991. After her retirement, Nadean enjoyed traveling and visiting with her children that lived out of state.

Nadean was a long time member of Arnhart Baptist Church, where she was active, serving as Director of Vacation Bible School for several years. She also led in the Women’s Missionary Union and Sisters in Christ. Nadean very much enjoyed visiting and talking with family and friends, and keeping up with her former students.

She was married to Don Henderson on February 8, 1953, to this union three children were born, Janet, Susan and Jerry. She later married Julian “John” Merritt on June 28, 1968. Nadean is survived by her children, Jerry Henderson of Purdy, Janet Henderson of Southlake, Texas, and Susan King and husband Breck of Lorton, Virginia; three grandchildren, Gracie King, Chad King and Devon (Henderson) Forsyth and husband Preston; two great-grandchildren, Faith King and Henry Forsyth; one sister, Evelyn Bowman and husband Eddie of Galena, Mo.; one brother, Jim Bennett and wife Beverly of Purdy; and four sisters-in-law, Jeanne Bennett, Peggy Bennett, Charlene Bennett and Katherine Wormington and husband Cecil.

Preceding her in death are her husband, parents and grandparents; three sisters, Merilyn Hemphill, Wilma Lowe and Mildred Rerick; and four brothers, Marvin Bennett, Gary Bennett, Glendell Bennett and Clinton Bennett.

Nadean loved flowers, but if you choose in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Arnhart Cemetery or plant flowers or roses in your yard in memory of Nadean.

Funeral services for Mrs. Merritt will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at Arnhart Baptist Church in Purdy. Rev. Jason Mackey will be officiating. Interment will follow at the Arnhart Cemetery. Visitation was held from 6-8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
