39-year-old was facing local, Arkansas charges

A man was found dead in the Barry County jail from a self-inflicted incident on June 17.

According to Maj. Leonard Collins, with the Barry County Sheriff’s Office, David Allen, 39, of Huntsville, Ark., was arrested on June 16, taken to Mercy Hospital in Joplin and released from the hospital as fit for confinement.

Allen was on suicide watch, meaning a jailer must check on him every 15 minutes. Collins said jailers knew Allen had mental issues.

Allen died at about 1 p.m. on June 17. He had charges pending in Barry county for third-degree assault and resisting arrest, and he was facing two counts of rape in Madison County, Ark., in a case from June 2017. His trial was set to begin this week.

Collins said a corded phone in Allen’s jail cell allowed him to commit suicide. Collins said there were two staff on duty at the time, and the jail had 53 inmates this week, but can run up to about 80.

  • As a former employee of the Barry County Jail, I believe that this case needs to be investigated further. First of all, the jail cell that Mr. Allen would have been detained in, would not have had a phone in it. He would also have been given a special suit to wear so he could not harm himself. In the off chance that they did place Mr. Allen into general population, the individual cells do not have telephones in them. The telephones are out in the day use area where there is a full view from the cameras as well as the other inmates. The only way that Mr. Allen could have hung himself were if they had placed him in a female cell, and even then the cords are not long enough to successfully wrap around someones neck.
