Members of the Southwest FFA Chapter have accomplished many things in the past year and had many new opportunities, competing in local, area, district, and state levels of competition.

During the State FFA Convention event, the Chapter received recognition for placing First place in the Walnut Gathering competition and were ranked as a Silver Chapter on their POA.

The Poultry team, Soils team, Division 1 speaker, Extemporaneous Speaker, and Creed Speaker competed in state competition.

The Chapter also had five members receive their State FFA Degree.

FFA Officers have attended leadership workshops such as LEAD and Area Training for Chapter Officers.

In June, FFA members Jacey Ball and Sydney Delossantos attended the Washington Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C., where they attended leadership workshops, met people from all over the country, and toured the city.

Three students, Ashlenn Robbins, Leland Colf, and Maggie Patterson, also attended Public Speaking Academy, which helped guide students on how to write and present speeches.

The FFA chapter kicked off the new year with a game of slip-n-slide kickball. At the event, students were encouraged to meet new FFA members and work in teams to win the game.

In October, three members, Shaylin Hendrix, Jacey Ball, and Maggie Patterson, attended the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., where they met new people, attended leadership sessions, five students received their American FFA degree, and toured the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Louisville Slugger, and Churchill Downs.

After the convention, members planned Chapter Barnwarming, where candidates competed in games and Timothy Bee and Maggie Patterson were announced as 2017-2018 King and Queen. Members then danced the night away. Southwest FFA members also served a meal and walked veterans in our annual Veterans Day Program.

In addition to all of their activities, Chapter members held several community service projects.

Members held the second annual Feed the Fighters event where they prepared a meal and had live music to thank local EMS, Firefighters and Police.

Members also planned and completed the fourth annual FFA Food Drive and Angel Tree, where students collected food for 30 families, and Christmas gifts for 119 students within the Southwest school district. Members were also able to get hat, gloves, and coats for each student on the Angel Tree thanks to donations and Miss Merry Christmas donations.

Other activities students have been involved in include Greenhand conferences, PBR, MU Field Day, Monett Agribusiness Academy, Area Barnwarming, and handing out hot chocolate at Christmas parades.

Upcoming activities for the Chapter include Area Banquet, Leadership Development Events (LDEs) and Career Development Events (CDEs) competitions, Labor Auction, State Convention, Chapter Banquet, a plant sale and many more activities in planning.

The Chapter will be holding the following events for FFA Week:

Wednesday: Teacher Breakfast - FFA shirts or blue and gold

Thursday: Greenhandcamo, Friday - dress like an animal
