Col. Vernon Russell McCracken
Col. Vernon Russell McCracken, 84, of Wheaton, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017.
He was born Feb. 7, 1933, in Exeter, the son of Ira and Nila McCracken. On June 7, 1953, in Pocahontas, Ark., he was united in marriage to Virginia Brockman who preceded him in death on Nov. 7, 2013. Also preceding him in death were his parents and five brothers, Lee Roy, Nolan G., Norman R., Bill G. and Gerald McCracken.
Survivors include: two sons, Mike McCracken and his wife Trish and Marc McCracken and his wife Tammy, all of Cassville; two daughters, Deborah Miller and her husband Dan of Cassville, and Brenda Kennedy of Wheaton; one sister-in-law, Patty McCracken of Monett; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He received his education in Wheaton, graduating from high school in 1949. He then attended Reppert Auctioneer School of Auctioning in Decatur, Ind. His first job was working for Cecil Brattin. During the Korean War, he was in the U.S. Army serving from April 1, 1953, until Feb. 18, 1955. Most of his life was spent auctioneering at automobile auctions all over the country. He also had a farm, raising cattle and horses.
Services were held Monday, at McQueen Funeral Home in Wheaton. Pastor Paul Wahlert will conduct the services.
Burial with military honors was at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Butterfield.
