Wildcats’ Austin Wilson runs into SBU signing
Cassville runner to pull double duty in college sports
For Cassville senior Austin Wilson, the goal of obtaining a college scholarship came true recently in the form of an offer from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar.
While at school, the Cassville runner has agreed to pull double duty and will run on the Bearcat cross-country team in the fall and the track and field team in the spring.
“It felt like home up there,” Wilson said. “I like how close to home it is and I have several friends up there already.”
According to Chris Shore, Cassville cross-country coach, Wilson’s work ethic is what has set him apart from other runners.
“His work ethic has been outstanding, especially over the last couple of years,” Shore said. “A large part of what we have been able to do and accomplish as a team has been because of his hard work.”
Shore said Wilson is a special athlete when it comes to running.
“He can sprint and do distance running,” Shore said. “Normally, runners are good at one or the other. Austin has the ability to be successful at both, and that makes him a desirable athlete.”
Wilson plans to take his athletic career seriously and has set some lofty goals for himself.
“My biggest goal is to get there and be ready to compete,” Wilson said. “I know that the competition level is going to be a step up and I plan to prepare so I can compete from day 1.”
The senior plans to major in physical education for kindergarten through second grade and pursue coaching.
Wilson is the son of Tammy and Justin Wilson.
