Wildcats liven up for 34-13 win
Tolbert scores 4 touchdowns in Wildcats victory
A big second half on both sides of the ball powered Cassville to a 34-13 win over Aurora Friday.
Aurora started the game on a mission, driving nearly 75 yards with a mix of run and pass plays. The Houn’ Dawgs capped the 4:47 drive with a 5-yard rush up the middle for a 7-0 lead.
On its first drive, Cassville had a solid kickoff return, but fell inches short on a fourth-and-1 run near midfield.
A 30-yard run play then set Aurora up inside the 10, but Cassville’s defense held strong and forced a turnover on downs. With poor field position, the Wildcats were forced to punt the ball back. But another strong defensive stand forced a second turnover on downs.
On this drive, Cassville started moving.
Spurred by a 40-yard run by quarterback Shannon Haney, the Wildcats flirted with the halftime clock, but Anthony Tolbert managed a 6-yard rushing score with 39 seconds to go.
A missed point-after attempt kept the Houn’ Dawgs in the lead at the break, 7-6.
Cassville’s offense livened up in the final half, as the Wildcats took advantage of prime field position after a squib kick. The Wildcats drove 52 yards in just over 4 minutes, with Haney scampering in for a 3-yard touchdown run.
Three minutes later, Aurora threatened in the red zone, but a Jonny Medina pick at the 6 and an 83-yard run off the right tackle by Tolbert put the Wildcats up two scores.
Aurora added another on a 33-yard strike through the air near the pylon, but Cassville would not relinquish the lead.
After another short kick, Cassville drove from midfield and Tolbert added his third score of the night on a 2-yard run.
The Wildcats’ defense buried the Houn’ Dawgs for the rest of the game. Big sacks by Wyatt Goode and Logan Carlin on consecutive drives sealed the win.
Tolbert added a fourth score, a 27-yard run, for good measure.
