Newspaper nearly doubles 2016 awards haul

SPRINGFIELD — For the third straight year, the Cassville Democrat has earned the Gold Cup in the small weeklies division of the Missouri Press Association's annual contest, the MPA announced at its convention Saturday.

The Gold Cup is awarded to the newspaper that scores the most points in individual categories. The contest was judged by Michigan journalists.

The Democrat nearly doubled its awards haul from 2016. The newspaper won 63 total awards, compared to 34 last year, and 23 first place awards, compared to 14 in 2016.

The newspaper’s Gold Cup win in 2015 is believed to be the first in the newspaper's 146-year existence.

“The state of Missouri has a rich tradition of print journalism excellence, so this is obviously a huge honor,” said Jacob Brower, the Cassville Democrat’s publisher. “Our team does a great job and I’m happy to see them recognized for their efforts. We are blessed to have excellent support from the Barry County community.”

Brower said he is especially pleased that the newspaper won the award the same weekend that Bob Mitchell, editor and publisher emeritus, was inducted into the Missouri Press Hall of Fame. Mitchell retired in 1995.

“Bob led the Cassville Democrat for numerous years, and the benefits of his hard work are still being enjoyed today,” Brower said. “None of this would be possible without him.”
