Aurora rallies in final 2 inning to take home the title

Monett baseball can take some solace in the fact that their season was ended by the eventual Class 4 state champions.

On Friday, Aurora rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the sixth inning with three runs to tie the score and then plated two more runs in the seventh to claim its first state title in school history with a 5-3 win over Lutheran South in O’Fallon.

Trailing 3-0 and down to Aurora’s final six outs, Wyatt Sparks drew a lead-off walk to open the sixth. With one out, Mathew Miller hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season to pull the Houn’ Dawgs within one.

Gage Singer and Preston Naylor then singled back-to-back.

With two outs, Ryan Cline singled to tied the score at 3-3.

In the seventh, Cassville transfer Jeremiah Fisher hit his first home run of the season to give Aurora a 4-3 edge. Sparks then walked and scored on an error to complete the comeback.

The Houn’ Dawgs opened the Final Four with a 12-2 thumping over Pleasant Hill in five innings in the semifinal.
