Washburn woman dies in train crash
73-year-old dies at hospital following wreck
A Washburn woman died Wednesday after her vehicle was struck by a train at about 11:08 a.m. at 24047 Private Drive, off Farm Road 1065.
According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Sylvia Hayworth, 73, of Washburn, was driving a 2015 Nissan Versa westbound, failed to yield and crossed the train tracks with no signal device. Her vehicle was struck by the Arkansas and Missouri Railroad Company Electro-motive diesel, being engineered by David Garvin, 49, of Springdale, Ark.
Hayworth was pronounced dead at 11:49 a.m. by Dr. Joe Himes at Mercy Hospital in Cassville. She was wearing a safety device, and the vehicle was totaled.
This is the 31st fatal wreck of 2017 for Troop D of the Highway Patrol, which covers 18 counties in southwest Missouri, including Barry.
