Cassville to screen preschoolers

Preschool screening for 3- and 4-year-old children in the Cassville school district is scheduled for March 31 and April 7. Parents of 3- and 4-year-old children may call the primary office at 417-847-2445 to schedule an appointment. The screening results will be used to help determine eligibility. If the student is eligible for the preschool program, the parent will be contacted at a later date to come in and fill out the required enrollment paperwork. Children who will be eligible to attend kindergarten for the 2017–2018 school year should not participate in this screening.

City of Washburn to conduct sewer tests

The city of Washburn will conduct smoke tests in its sewer system on March 20-24. The smoke is non-toxic, non-staining, has no odor and creates no fire hazards. The smoke should not enter a home unless there is defective plumbing or dried up drain traps. If anyone at a home or business suffers from respiratory issues or is immobile, they should notify city hall by calling 417-846-3203 or 417-846-5242. More information about the tests may be found in person at city hall.

Jenkins Fire Chili Supper scheduled

The Annual Jenkins Fire Chili Supper will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday at Station No. 1, just west of the junction of Highways 39 and 248. The menu includes chili, soup, brown beans and ham with cornbread, dessert and drink, all for a donation to the fundraiser. Interested individuals are asked to provide desserts and regular and diet soft drinks. With the rash of fires recently, the fire department is using extra fuel and supplies for equipment and feeding hungry volunteers. Money from fundraisers is also used for training. The Jenkins Fire Department is an all-volunteer department. For more information, people may call Sara at 417-342-4243.

Education Fund’s Trivia night returns March 10

Cassville’s newest champions of trivia will be crowned on March 10 at the Cassville Education Fund’s annual Trivia Night fundraiser. The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Cassville High School commons area. Now in its seventh year, Trivia Night is an annual fundraiser that provides grants to benefit local education. This year, an anonymous supporter has made a $5,000 challenge grant, which will provide a dollar-for-dollar match for all donations made to the Fund through May 31. The defending champions are members of Team DKDC, representing the Cassville Branch Library. Question topics include sports, history, geography, literature, pop culture, movies, music, food and nature. Four round of team trivia will be held, and winner-take-all bonus point competitions will be held in between rounds. The overall champions will be the team with the most correct answers and bonus points. In addition, the Smarties Award will be given to the team with the most correct answers. Pizza, dessert and refreshments will be available for a donation throughout the evening.

Voter registration deadline upcoming

The last day to register to vote in Barry County is March 8 for those who wish to vote in the April 4 General Municipal Election. People may register to vote at the County Clerk’s Office, the Monett Chamber of Commerce or the the Shell Knob Chamber of Commerce. People should notify the clerk’s office if they have moved and have not updated their address, or had a name change. Absentee voting will continue through April 3 at the Barry County Clerk’s Office in Cassville, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If unable to vote in person, a voter may send a written request to the office of: Gary Youngblood, 700 Main St. Suite 2, Cassville, MO, 65625 or fax to: 417-847-5311. The office will need: name, physical address, mailing address, date of birth, last four digits of Social Security number, phone number, reason for voting absentee and signature. Those who live in the Shell Knob or Monett area can go by the Shell Knob Chamber or Monett Chamber Office and fill out the absentee application. They will fax it to the Barry County Clerk’s office. FFA schedules pair of fundraising events

The Cassville FFA will host a baked potato fundraiser Friday. Residents can pre-order a potato and have it delivered or pick it up at the ag building from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. To order, people can contact Jennifer Privett at 417-847-6736, or Mr. Hinson or Mr. Littlefield at the high school at 417-847-3137. The Cassville FFA will also be hosting a Paddle Party fundraiser on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the high school. People should bring their own rolls of quarters, two or three. More than 30 items will be available. There will also be a silent auction.

Southwest hosting chili, baked potato fundraiser for band

The Southwest Band Boosters will host their annual Chili and Baked Potato dinner and auction fundraiser on April 8, changed from April 1. The money raised will support the band with purchasing items needed throughout the year, including music, stands, instruments, repairs, awards and scholarships. The Boosters are seeking donations from local businesses, and all donors will be recognized at the fundraiser. For more information, people may call 417-826-5050.
