A close first half broke into a big difference on the scoreboard after halftime, as Cassville topped East Newton 63-15 at home in the opening round of district playoffs.

The Wildcats started hot, stopping a fake punt on fourth-and-2 on the Patriots' 36. River Phelps then slashed through the middle for a 31-yard strike to put the first points on the board. Two minutes later, Phelps found paydirt again from 41 yards.

However, the confident Cassville squad found trouble on its next possession, as East Newton returned a 45-yard kickoff return to midfield and two pass plays into a 2-yard run to bring the score to 14-8.

The Wildcats worried again after a dropped kickoff catch set up East Newton at the Cassville 29. Bad snaps led to a long fourth down and a turnover, and Cassville extended the lead again with a 31-yard Phelps run.

Another bad snap allowed Devin Phelps to punch the ball out for a fumble, and River Phelps capitalized again with a 6-yard score.

Not to be totally left behind in the first half, East Newton on fourth-and-6 tossed a ball for a 59-yard touchdown and 28-15 scoreline.

After halftime, things escalated quickly.

Steven Hunter scored on a 1-yard run, then a Troy Rose interception set up Phelps for a 3-yard score. Less than one minute later, Zack Burton recovered a fumble, and one play later, Phelps scored his sixth touchdown of the night on a 21-yard run.

Less than five minutes into the third quarter, Cassville opened up a 49-15 lead. Shannon Haney set off the turbo clock with a 30-yard run with 1:04 left in the third quarter.
