Chase starts in Aurora, ends when man allegedly attempts to ram officer with vehicle

The Missouri State Highway Patrol, with assistance from Barry County deputies, is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a man in critical condition in the early morning hours on Wednesday.

According to the Highway Patrol, at about 2:19 a.m., an officer with the Aurora Police Department initiated a pursuit of a red suburban suspected to be stolen.

The pursuit started in Aurora and continued into Barry County, ending east of Purdy on Farm Road 1165 near McDowell. The suspect turned down a private lane, leading the officer to stop and and exit his vehicle.

The suspect allegedly turned around and began driving toward the Aurora officer in an attempt to ram him, leading the officer to fire multiple rounds, striking the suspect.

The suspect was transported to Cox South Hospital and is in critical condition, according to Barry County Sheriff Mick Epperly. The officer was not injured.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating the incident at the request of the Aurora chief of police.

Epperly said Barry County Deputies Chris Hutson and Taylor Lombard arrived to the scene after the shooting had taken place, and Hutson gave medical care to the suspect until first responders arrived to transport the suspect to Cox South.

Epperly said Barry County Detectives Doug Henry and Terry Meek went out to assist the Highway Patrol in the investigation, and Det. Rob Evenson arrived later in the morning to assist, as well.

Brad DeLay, Lawrence County sheriff, said his office was not involved in the incident, nor the investigation.

"My closest officer was at the county line, but the pursuit had already gone into Barry County and the Aurora officer and Highway patrol were there, so we did not send any additional officers," he said. "We have not been asked to do anything for the investigation at this point.
