Memorial garden dedication honors Eakin

Wednesday, August 17, 2016
The Melba Eakin Memorial Garden dedication was held at Central Crossing Senior Center in Shell Knob July 12, with a crowd of over 100 in attendance. Eakin was instrumental in founding and supporting the center, which numerous Barry County seniors enjoy today. A meal was held before the ceremony. In attendance was Eakin's mother, Jessie Sutton from Louisiana; Carol Dempster and Rhefina Wilkin, both friends of Eakin from New York. The three ladies contributed significantly to the project, and Jeff Harp, chief publicity officer of the center, publicly acknowledged their contributions at the dedication. Also in attendance was Starr Kohler, CEO of SeniorAge, along with several of her key staff. SeniorAge is the main tenant of Central Crossing Senior Center and the agency which provides the meals and pays staff. Barry County residents are invited to see the new memorial garden, and Harp said the garden represents the love Melba, her mother, and friends have shown the people who enjoy the center.
