Attempts to revive child unsuccessful on scene, at hospital

An 8-year-old boy drowned in Flat Creek at about 1 p.m. Friday while swimming with two other boys.

According to Barry County Sheriff Mick Epperly, Haiden Conner Harrison, 8, of Cassville, was swimming with two other boys in Flat Creek near Farm Road 2140 and Highway Y.

"The other two boys hadn't seen [Harrison] for a while, so they ran to a house that they knew and called 911," Epperly said.

Epperly said when he, Det. Doug Henry, Sgt. Dave Ruark, local firefighters, and local EMTs arrived on the scene, they found Harrison face down in the water. After rushing to get Harrison out of the water, first responders attempted CPR, which was unsuccessful. Harrison was then transported to the hospital, where doctors worked for 45 minutes to revive him.

Epperly said boy was staying with his grandmother, who took over his guardianship due to his parents' legal issues.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, Harrison was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital in Cassville.

This is the third water fatality of the year for Troop D of the Highway Patrol, which covers 18 counties in southwest Missouri, including Barry.
