Cassville library to kick off summer reading program

Theme is Get Ready, Get Set, Read!

The Cassville Branch Library is kicking off its summer reading program, to ensure local students keep their minds sharp and their reading skills up to speed over summer.

The theme this year is: Get Ready, Get Set, Read!

According to Verna Fry, youth services director at the library, continuing to read over the summer is important for a number of reasons.

"Reading exercises the mind and helps keeps it sharp, just as physical activity keeps the body healthy," said Fry. "As you play during the summer, include your mind in stimulating activities, too. Attend great programs and take out books from your local Barry-Lawrence Regional branch library. Children retain more of what was learned at school, discover fun, new concepts, and have a wonderful head start on the new school year to come when participating in summer reading events. So, Get Ready, Get Set, Read! 2016 at the library!"

A variety of activities will be offered from June 2 through July 28 for children and adults from preschool and up, and prizes will be given for children for each five, 10 and 15 items read. All reading or listening material counts, including books, magazines, newspapers, novels, audio books, etc. Qualifying material includes items read, or read to the participant.

After each item read or listened to, children may complete an entry form and turn it into a local branch. Forms will be used for drawings for additional prizes, and the grand prize drawing for a Kindle Fire at the end of summer. Participants must be in good standing to be eligible to win the grand prize.

Participants can sign up in person or online, and get a reading log game sheet.
