Eagles upset Bears in sectional
Birge allows 2 hits in 1-0 victory
After the Purdy baseball team's first batter scored a run, pitcher Sydney Birge held up the tally to lead the Eagles to a win over Galena, 1-0, to advance to the Class 2 quarterfinal on Wednesday in Plato.
"This was a great win," said Joshua Hughes, Purdy coach. "The boys bought in early to our system and came together when it mattered most to get the win."
Birge, with his bevy of breaking pitches, allowed two hits and struck out six in seven innings of work.
"I felt comfortable on the mound tonight and my location was spot on," Birge said. "It's pretty special for a senior who has graduated to still be helping his team win. I want to ride this season as long as possible."
The Eagles' lone run was manufactured when James Hughlett lead off in the game getting hit by a pitch. He was sacrificed to second, then took third on a wild pitch. Hughlett then scored on Dusty Videmschek's RBI ground out.
The Bears never solved Birge, and only once did they have a runner reach second base.
The Eagles advance to the quarterfinal at Plato on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
