Sheriff, public administrator candidates heading to forum

Wednesday, May 18, 2016

The seven candidates for sheriff and three candidates for public administrator have all been invited to a forum on Thursday at the Community Building in Wheaton, hosted by the Wheaton Fire Department.

Lindy Lombard, assistant fire chief, said the idea came about as a way for firefighters and residents in the area to get to know the candidates better.

"The sheriff, fire departments and first responders all have to work together, and we put this together so people on the west side of the county could put some faces to the names," he said. "I hope people will come out and we can help make their decision in August a lot easier."

Lombard said six of the seven candidates for sheriff have confirmed their attendance, and all of the public administrator candidates are coming. Sheriff candidates include: Travis Hilburn, R-Cassville; Danny Boyd, R-Purdy; James A. Smith, R-Aurora; Justin Fohn, R-Cassville; Terry Meek, R-Washburn; Gary Davis, R-Cassville; and Justin Ruark, D-Cassville. As of Monday, Fohn was the only candidate to have not confirmed for the event. Public administrator candidates include: Andy Reavis, R-Cassville; Rodney Hughes, R-Cassville; and Keith Daniels, R-Exeter.

Lombard said each candidate will get an opening statement, then he has about three questions for to ask each candidate about the two positions. Three questions will go to sheriff candidates, an another three to public administrator candidates. Each candidate will then get a closing statement.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m., and Lombard said he believes it will run until about 8 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.

"We've got room for about 80 people, so we're hoping for a full house," he said.

The event will be held at the Wheaton Community Building, located behind the fire station on Allman Street.
