Detectives and Mystery-themes to create fun learning environment

Th Exeter school district will hold summer school the week after school ends, from May 23 through June 17.

Kindergarten through eighth grade are eligible to attend. Students will have the opportunity to focus on core subjects and keep their minds sharp to retain what they've learned for the school year while having summer fun.

"Our focus will be on core concepts in reading and math," said Tim Jordan, Exeter Elementary principal. "We will also have several inquiry science lessons. Teachers will be using technology and project-based lessons to enhance learning. Teachers have already planned some great ways to wrap the [summer] themes around their reading, writing and math assignments."

Sign-up letters were sent home to parents to indicate if their child would be attending, however students may still come to summer school if they have not yet completed the form, Jordan said.

"We have already received signed papers for almost 90 students that plan on attending," he said. "We will be running bus routes for those students. Therefore, it would be helpful for parents to let the school know if they plan on attending and riding the school bus."

While school children may be ready to hear the final school bell ring and the announcement that school's out for summer, students can benefit academically from attending summer school, and enjoy themselves, too.

"We believe summer school is such a positive way to extend learning opportunities for our students," Jordan said. "We want it to be a fun and exciting learning environment. However, we would also like to see students improving their reading and math skills. Furthermore, this is an opportunity for students and teachers to enhance their usage of online learning using Chromebooks. Our goal is for students in summer school to be more prepared for the coming school year.

"More importantly, we strive to encourage a love for learning. I am really proud of our teachers. The teachers have already come up with multiple creative ways to provide exciting learning opportunities. They even created a promotional music video based on one of the weekly themes. We plan to show the video in the classroo
