Lady Eagles fall to Mt. Vernon in sectional tilt, 7-6

PURDY -- The Purdy softball season came to a screeching halt on Tuesday with a 7-6 loss to Mt. Vernon in the Class 1 sectional round.

For 5-1/2 innings, Lady Luck shined graciously down upon the 25-3 Lady Eagles, as they dealt with a bevy of base runners from the 22-7 Lady Mountaineers in every inning but the second.

Leading 4-1, the Lady Eagles' luck dried up in the bottom of the sixth inning, when the first five Mt. Vernon batters found bases safely. By the end of the Lady Mountaineers' rally, six runs had crossed the plate. Purdy aided Mt. Vernon with a walk and two errors in the frame.

Mt. Vernon struck first in the bottom of the first with a single tally.

The Lady Eagles responded with an RBI triple by Andrea Humphrey in the top of the second to knot the score.

Purdy took the lead two innings later with a two-out RBI single by Casey Ellison to score Halle Henderson. The lead grew to 4-1 with a Mt. Vernon error and fielder's choice in the fifth inning.

Mt. Vernon flirted with scoring chances in the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the third and the fourth, the Lady Mountaineers had their first two leadoff hitters reach base, only to see the Lady Eagles squeeze out of the jam.

In the fifth, Mt. Vernon had runners reach first and second again with one out, but Purdy again snuffed the rally.

In the seventh, Mickey Schad singled and Henderson drew a two-out walk. Both runners scored on Rion Boyd's RBI single.
Sami House then lifted a ball to shallow center field that was run down and caught by shortstop Alane Cordray to end the game.

Mt. Vernon will move on to the state quarterfinals, hosting Stockton on Thursday. The time of the game has yet to be determined.
