2 airlifted after head-on collision on Hwy. 39

Three people were injured Saturday in a wreck at 6:08 p.m. on Highway 39, four miles north of Shell Knob.

According to a Missouri State Highway Patrol report, David Shephard, 57, of Shell Knob, was driving a 1994 Mazda Navajo northbound on Highway 39 when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck head-on a 2004 Oldsmobile Alero, being driven by Casey Petzoldt, 28, of Springfield.

Shephard and Petzoldt each suffered serious injuries and were both airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Springfield. A passenger in Petzoldt's vehicle, Chelsea Petzoldt, 29, of Springfield, suffered minor injuries and was not transported.

Casey Petzoldt and Chelsea Petzoldt were wearing safety devices, and Shephard was not. Both vehicles were totaled.

Four state troopers, the Barry County Sheriff's Office and the Central Crossing Fire Department assisted on the scene.
