High school foreign language, band teachers to leave

Faculty changes will take place at the Purdy school district in the coming year following action by the board of education.

Gerry Wass, the district's foreign language teacher, turned in his letter of retirement. Wass has also played an instrumental role in starting up the recycling program, which is run by the high school Spanish Club. He has been with the district since 2002.

James Adams, the district's band director since 2009, resigned effective in the coming school year. Adams accepted a position with New Site Baptist Church as its technology and sound equipment operator.

According to Superintendent Steven Chancellor, Samantha Burt, the elementary school's vocal music teacher, has a degree in teaching band and has been helping Adams as assistant marching band director. The school board agreed to name her to the band post and advertise for a new elementary vocal teacher. Chancellor said he had not yet approached Burt about whether she wished to continue as director of the Eagle Echoes elementary choir, another extra duty assignment.

Board members also approved adding Candice Ozbun and Brittany Mareth as substitute teachers.
