Blood drive hits goal for code yellow alert

Angela Ledenham, of Garfield, Ark., takes a break from her busy day to give blood to the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks at Mercy on Monday. While donating, along with free snacks and drinks, Donor Specialist Jantzen Russell threw in some free education, explaining to Ledenham that giving blood on a regular basis actually helps decrease heart disease and stroke. She said the reason is because donating in effect recirculates blood as old blood is recycled out and fresh, new cells are allowed to build up. The blood center was on a code yellow alert, down to a two-day supply of blood. By the end of the 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. shift, it had collected blood from 14 donors, surpassing its goal of 12 donors to return to a safe status. Julia Kilmer reporter@cassville-democrat.com
