Lavern James Ray

Lavern James Ray, 93, of Shell Knob, passed away Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016, at Roaring River Health and Rehabilitation, Cassville. He was born July 29, 1922, to Joe and Parelee (Doty) Ray of Cato.

He lived in Barry County all of his life. He attended the Fairview School and Pentecostal Church. He married Tessie Reed, of Cassville, on May 24, 1941.

He was a farmer and worked for the U.S. Forestry Department of Cassville. Upon his retirement he raised beef cattle.

Survivors include: his wife, Tessie, of 74 years; children, Leon and Freda Ray, of Aurora, Ronnie Ray, of Neosho, Luther and Rowena Ray, of Aurora, Mike and Anette Ray, of Kirbyville, Norma Gibson, of Cassville, Linda Welch of Kearney, Joyce and Charles Bacon, of Marionville, and Mary and Melvin Harris, of Verona; one step-daughter, Pat Furry, of Redlands, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 23 great- grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and one sister, Blanche Hadlow.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Ira, Alvin, Loya and Net Ray; two sisters, Irene Bailey and Lottie Greffie; one son, Bob Ray; two grandchildren, Gary Lee Gibson, Jr. and Robin Smith; two sons-in-law, Gary Gibson, Sr., and Wayne Welch and one daughter-in-law, Naomi Ray.

Funeral services were held Wednesday in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Pastor Jody Ray and Pastor Lonnie Stockton conducted the services. Burial was at Clio Cemetery, Jenkins.
