Seligman to host parade, lighting contest
Parade set for Dec. 12 at 2 p.m.
The city of Seligman gearing up for its annual slate of Christmas activities, including a parade, a lighting contest and a visit from Santa Claus.
The Seligman Christmas Parade will be held Saturday, Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. Line up is at 1 p.m. The parade will begin at the north end of town, at the corner of Highway 37 and Business 37, traveling south to the community center.
Following the parade, Santa Claus will be at the community center to greet children and hand out treat bags.
"We hand out goody bags with things like apples, oranges, coloring books and candy to children," said Kari Short, Seligman Deputy and Court Clerk, who said they are expecting about 200 children to attend the parade this year, and about 400 people in general.
To register to be in the parade, people may call Brian Nichols or Short at City Hall at 417-662-3600.
"We have lots of floats, including religious floats, floats from different functions like the spook trail, Southwest School Marching Band, cheerleaders, lots of ATV's antique cars and horses," Short said.
Trophies and cash prizes will be given. For religious floats, there will be a first-, second- and third-place awards, with first and second prizes receiving $40 and $25, respectively. Non-religious floats will be the same. Marching units will receive first-, second- and third-place awards.
Best animal unit, Best Antique Vehicle, Best Non-Antique Vehicle, Best Motorcycle or Off-Road (to include tractors, four-wheelers, carts or bikes), will receive a trophy for first-place in their respective category.
The Seligman Christmas Lighting Contest will be judged on the nights of Dec. 9-11. All houses decorated will be judged. No registration is needed. Winners will be announced after the parade on Dec. 12.
"We're super excited to have it," Short said. "It's a pretty big event."
