2 Barry-Lawrence libraries change hours
Miller switch a response to 4-day school schedule
Two branches in the Barry-Lawrence Regional Library will have new hours following action by the library board in October.
Directors split over director Gina Milburn's request to consider changing hours at the Eagle Rock Branch. After polling Eagle Rock customers, Branch Supervisor Jennifer Cochran recommended changing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and from 1-5 p.m. on Fridays. The request would fill the four additional hours board members approved adding at the branch.
Cindy Rinker, supervisor for the Miller Branch, reported that because the school district in town has switched to a four-day-a-week schedule, the library could serve customers better by having Monday hours when school is not in session. Library staff also wanted to offer programming for preschoolers and grade school children on Mondays. A poll of customers also supported a switch in hours.
The library had been open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Library board members approved moving hours from Tuesdays to Mondays.
Milburn polled board members for an email vote. Charles Peiter, Jan Vaughn, Marilyn Carey, Julie Vaughn, Felicity Nesbitt and Ann Hall supported the change. Chris Barnes voted against the move, and Gina McIlrath did not respond. With the majority in favor, the new hours went into effect on Oct. 5.
Milburn asked board members to consider closing the Shell Knob Branch every other Saturday on a temporary basis. With other branch changes under consideration, board members opted to table the proposal until the end of the year.
