Cassville freshmen down Bolivar in 20-12 contest
Wildcats' Tolbert, Hoppes led team to victory Monday
Cassville hosted Bolivar in a freshmen football contest on Monday at Wildcat Stadium, earning a hard-fought, 20-12, victory over the visiting Liberators.
Cassville opened the scoring on its first drive, when Anthony Tolbert dashed into the end zone to cap off a long, sustained ground attack by the Wildcats. Tolbert's 2-point conversion gave Cassville an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter.
Bolivar quickly answered with a long touchdown pass, but failed to convert the extra point attempt, allowing Cassville to maintain an 8-6 lead.
The only scoring in the second quarter took place when Ethan Hoppes got loose down the right sideline and outran the Bolivar defenders on his way to the goal line. This score put Cassville on top 14-6 at the halftime break.
Solid defense by both teams led to a scoreless third quarter. However, the fourth quarter was packed with plenty of excitement, as both teams were able to score. A quarterback sneak by Hoppes for a touchdown gave the home team what appeared to be a comfortable 20-6 lead early in the final stanza.
That comfortable feeling disappeared when Bolivar scored to close the gap to 20-12, and promptly recovered the ensuing onside kickoff at the Cassville 40-yard line.
Thankfully, the Wildcat defense flexed its collective muscles and held the Liberators on fourth down, giving possession back to the offense.
From there, the Wildcats were able to convert a couple first downs and run out the clock to preserve the victory.
