Press box getting remodel
Construction addresses safety concerns, media accommodations
Fans driving by Wildcats Stadium may notice construction occurring at the hallowed football field.
Cassville's six-member maintenance staff has begun construction of the new press box facility, with the goal to have it completed by June.
"We are fortunate to have great guys on staff with construction experience," said Richard Asbill, superintendent. "We get a professional product at a cost savings to the district."
Asbill noted that the previous press box was built in the early 1980s with an exterior catwalk.
It was never intended to house anyone on its roof, but a ladder was added to accommodate coaches and game filmers as the box became full.
"As Cassville football grew in popularity and other schools began to bring their media, room in the box became a premium," Asbill said. "We never did like the fact we had to put people on a roof that wasn't designed for that purpose."
In designing the new facility, Asbill said they calculated the total area being used on the first and second floors and then redesigned it in a single-floor format.
"We looked at several facilities and took the best ideas from them and formed our own version," Asbill said. "We are constructing a seven-room box that can hold all the coaches, filmers, scoreboard operator, announcers and statistician, as well as more media."
The cost of the new press box is projected at $22,000. Asbill said the district is accepting donations in the form of in-kind, cash or advertising opportunities. He also believes that the district will raise at least half of the cost of the facility through these donations.
