Purdy school district streamlines year-end calendar

Wednesday, March 25, 2015

With winter weather apparently at an end, dates for year-end activities and a calendar for the 2015-2016 school year have been adopted by the Purdy school district.

School will be held on April 6, April 13, May 20, May 21 and a half-day on May 22 to make up for weather that took place during the winter. Graduation has been set for May 9.

Superintendent Steven Chancellor said the decision to delay setting graduation worked well and will be used again next year. Board members adopted a school calendar for the 2015-2016 school year that also leaves graduation open. Classes will start on Aug. 12 and tentatively end on May 19, 2016. With Memorial Day not falling until May 30, the entire fourth week in May remains open for possible snow days.

Asked why so many so days are scheduled for late in May, Chancellor called use of those days situational. Other days are available on the calendar for earlier use: one in February, two in March and one in April. The biggest problem, he observed, stems from losing a lot of school days in December, as occurred last year, which takes away the four-day weekends faculty want.

"Four days is probably the average number of snow days we'll use," Chancellor said. "Nothing good happens when you come back to school after Memorial Day. You're just satisfying the state. Very little instruction is occurring."

The 2015-2016 calendar called for a two-week break in classes after mid-December and four-day weekends in mid-February, late March and mid-April.

One major change will respond to parents who have complained that parent-teacher conferences at the end of October come too late for them to make serious changes in their child's academic performance. Except for kindergarten and first graders, parent-teacher conferences will move to the end of September.

"We can talk about behavior patterns, and where we think the trajectory of students is going," Chancellor said. "Our teachers are anxious to see if this improves relationships with parents."

Prom will be held on April 11 at the Monett City Park Casino. Summer school this year will begin on May 26, and end on June 19, a total of 19 days.

For the immediate future, board members moved their next meeting up a week, to April 13, to meet the reorganizational deadline set by the state following the April 7 election. Reorganization will take place at 6 p.m., with open session for the regular session at 7 p.m.
