John L. Berning, 92, of Exeter, passed away Sunday, March 15, 2015, in his home.

He was born Jan. 6, 1923, in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of Frank and Marie (Leoaty) Berning. On March 19, 1946, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was united in marriage to Helen Laney, who survives. On March 19, they would have been married 69 years. Additional survivors include: one daughter, Jackie Holt, of Urbana; one brother, Frank Berning, Jr., of Cincinnati, Ohio; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother; one sister; two stepbrothers; and one stepsister.

He grew up and received his education in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he graduated from high school. He was inducted in the U.S. Army on Jan. 17, 1943, and retired after 27 years. He received a bronze star during the Korean War. He attended Cassville First Baptist Church. He was a life member of the American Legion and a life member of VFW.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville. Pastor James Weaver will conduct the services. Burial with military honors will be at Maplewood Cemetery, Exeter.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Fohn Funeral Home, Cassville.
