Ronald Nelson "Ron" Rickard

Ronald Nelson "Ron" Rickard, Sr., 78, of Shell Knob, passed away Friday, Feb. 27, in his home. He was born Feb. 6, 1937, in Maplewood, and was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson Rickard, Jessie (Johnson) Rickard, Ed Orth, Alice Orth-Hoehne, his stepfather; Arthur Hoehne; and sister, Jo Garcia.

Survivors include: his wife of 59 years, Patricia Ann "Pat"(Hoehne) Rickard; one son, Ronald Nelson "Rowdy" Rickard, Jr., and his wife, Melissa, of Billings; two daughters, Renee Jo Ray and her husband, Johnny, of Republic; Robyn Lynn Hendricks and her husband, John, of Cassville; one special adopted son, Marko Santala, and his wife, Joanna, of Helsinki, Finland; one sister, Neva Rae Rasch, of Manchester; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He attended St. John's Lutheran grade school and graduated from Eureka High School in Eureka, Mo. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves. On Aug. 20, 1955, in Alcorn County, Miss., he and Pat were united in marriage. In 1971, he and his family moved to Shell Knob to open Lakeside Auto. In 1972, he joined Central Crossing Fire Department. In 1976, he was recruited as Fire Chief. He was instrumental in the establishment of the local 911 center. He was the Fire Chief for 29 years before passing the torch to his grandson Rusty Rickard. He was the founder and organizer of the Shell Knob 4th of July celebration, which he started in 1976. He was also a member of the Lions Club for over 35 years. In 2006, he rediscovered his faith in God. At that point, he dedicated his life to serving God and sharing his testimony with anyone who would listen.

Funeral services were held Monday in Lohmer Full Gospel Church, Shell Knob, under direction of Fohn Funeral Home, Shell Knob. Officiating was Pastor David Donaldson and Pastor Lonnie Stockton. Contributions may be made to the Central Crossing Fire Department in memory of Ron.
