Pro angler hopes to show trout-catching skills

STIHL's Reel in the Outdoors with Joe Thomas will be filming Opening Day to trout season Sunday at Roaring River State Park.

Thomas plans to fish for trout in the morning until about noon, said Roger Phelps, promotional communications manager for STIHL Inc. He will then fish for bass at Table Rock Lake on Sunday afternoon and throughout Monday. These segments will air between October and December on the Outdoor Channel.

"The state parks are an amazing treasure," he said. "I think it's kind of interesting that most folks don't know what they have in their own backyard. Now, I'm not sure that's the case [at Roaring River State Park], since this sounds like this is pretty popular and gets a large number of people to come out. I definitely know we're proud to be part of it."

Besides getting some shots of Thomas fishing along Roaring River, Phelps said the show also plans on capturing quotes and stories from people who are at the event and interviewing Bill Bryan, director of the Missouri State Parks. The crew will shoot footage of the kickoff festivities, such as firing of the Opening Day gun.

It adds a human interest aspect to the show, he said. Thomas, who fishes all over the world, and has been a professional angler for 30 years, said he runs a nice and lean crew. The show normally has one camera that shoots multiple angles.

Last year, Phelps met Bryan at the National Association of State Park Directors conference in Nebraska after Phelps said he talked about how corporate sponsors can be more than just getting money and slapping a logo on something.

During the presentation, he said STIHL has training capabilities, it sponsors professional arborists and it has a fishing show.

"Right after I got done, Bill approached me and told me about the Opening Day of trout season, and it seemed like a natural fit," Phelps said.

Reel in the Outdoors with Joe Thomas runs for 13 weeks between October and December. The show has been on the air for 14 seasons, and it has been on the Outdoor Channel for nine of those seasons.
