Eagles face uphill fight at district tournament
The Purdy boys basketball team is best described by its coach Tommy Egan as a scrappy bunch.
The Eagles earned the No. 6 seed in the eight-team Class 2, District 12 basketball tournament when begins next Tuesday at Pierce City.
Pierce City (15-7) earned the No. 1 seed, with Miller (10-14) claiming the No. 2 spot.
"I think we have come together as a team over the last two weeks," Egan said. "We just need to keep taking steps forward."
Southwest (13-12), was slotted as the No. 3 seed. McAuley (16-7) is the No. 4 seed. College Heights (10-13) took the No. 5 seed and Purdy (11-12) fell to the No. 6 seed.
Sarcoxie (3-20) and Wheaton (0-25) round out the tourney field as the Nos. 7 and 8 seeds, respectively.
Pierce City and Wheaton will open tournament play at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Pierce City, followed by McAuley and College Heights. The winners advance to face each other in the semifinals at 6 p.m. on Feb. 26.
Miller and Sarcoxie square off at 7 p.m. Tuesday, immediately followed by Southwest and Purdy. The winners will play in the second semifinal on Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
"We lost to Southwest by one point earlier this season," Egan said. "We play extremely hard. We will need that effort and energy against to be successful."
The championship is scheduled for Feb. 28, at 6 p.m.
