Coach Powers believes district is wide open for the taking

Cassville Coach Danny Powers and his Wildcats team have been on a roller coaster this season.

Powers' Wildcats have struggled to find their identity, and their lack of size has hurt them in late game situations, according to the coach.

"In the last two weeks, we have lost twice in overtime and had some tight games at the end where we didn't finish."

Despite those frustrations, Powers said his team is still focused. He reminded them that history in their district does tend to favor the underdog.

Powers told his team about the 2010 Aurora boys basketball team that entered district play with just one win on the season and played for the district championship, losing to Cassville, 51-39.

"I look at our district and I believe it is wide open," Powers said. "We have not given up on the season, and we are still going to put our best five players on the floor to start every game."

Powers also added he is going to start working younger players into the rotation.

"We are going to give those guys who are returning next season a look," he said. "As a coach you want to win now, but you also have to keep preparing for the future."

Cassville travels to Lamar on Friday. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
