Seligman remembers Alderwoman Beaver
City prepares for 2015 elections
In the April 7 elections, Seligman voters will decide on a west ward candidate to fill a vacant position left by a alderwoman who died on Dec. 6.
Shirley Beaver, alderwoman since April 2013, knew a lot about the community, said Brian Nichols, Seligman city clerk.
"It's definitely a huge loss here," Nichols said.
On Dec. 8, the Seligman Board of Aldermen had a moment of silence for Beaver. She had one more year left on her term, Nichols said.
The board has a mayor, two east ward aldermen and two west ward aldermen. Both wards have two-year staggered terms. The mayor has a two-year term.
The terms for Mayor Jerry Montgomery; Ron Corn, east ward alderman; and Eric Freeman, west ward alderman, expire next year.
The Missouri Municipal League recommended that Seligman put up Beaver's vacant position on the official ballot as a one-year term, Nichols said. The other three positions will each be for two years.
Candidates can apply at the Seligman City Hall, located at 29144 Main St., by 4:30 p.m. Jan. 20 with Nichols or Deputy Clerk Kari Short. Candidates must be at least 21 or older, reside within the city limits a year prior to applying and a year after being elected, be a qualified voter, not be in arrears for city taxes, not be delinquent in municipal user fees, and not have unpaid personal or real estate property taxes with Barry County. Each alderman candidate can only apply for the ward that he or she lives within.
The city hall hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information about the upcoming elections, people may contact Nichols or Short at email@example.com or 417-662-3600.
