Southwest volleyball season ends in districts
Lady Trojans come up short in semifinal against Crane
Southwest High School's volleyball team fell one win short of a district championship game, falling to Crane in the semifinals last week, 25-20 and 25-17.
"We just weren't very sharp," said Steve Voyak, Southwest coach. "Give Crane credit. They are smart, athletic and play hard and deserved to win the match."
Senior middle Shannon Mitchell led Southwest with 12 digs, 9 kills and blocks, while junior outside hitter Savana Leonhardt added 10 digs and 5 assists.
In the quarterfinals, the Lady Trojans beat Forsyth 25-15, 22-25 and 25-20. Junior setter Jaime Shrum made all 23 of her serves with 3 aces and 6 assists, while Mitchell contributed 16 kills, 7 blocks and an ace while making all 11 of her serves.
"It was a great season and the girls really improved from when we started in the summer all the way through districts," Voyak said. "It will be sad to see this group of seniors graduate, but also satisfying because you know they are moving on to bigger and better things in their lives."
