A Cassville fumble on the first play from scrimmage and a 75-yard drive from Mt. Vernon for a score served as motivation for the Wildcats, who kicked into high gear and scored 35 unanswered for a 54-20 win in the first round of the district playoffs Friday.

Leigh Cox started the game with a long kickoff return, but the Wildcats fumbled and Mt. Vernon capitalized.

Cox would not be denied, as he returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards to tie the game.

Set up by a 23-yard River Phelps run, Cox found paydirt again in the opening quarter with an 8-yard rushing score.

Cox then made his presence felt on defense, using quick thinking to intercept a tipped pass. The pick set up a Wildcats drive that culminated in another score by Cox on a 2-yard rush. River Phelps added a 9-yard touchdown run to put Cassville up 28-7 at the break.

Cox continued his reign of terror in the third quarter, scoring his fourth touchdown of the game on a 7-yard run.

Phelps also stroked his way to more points, scoring three straight touchdowns on scores from 33 yards, 60 yards and 45 yards.
