GRANBY -- Cassville's football team moved a step closer to securing a home district playoff game with a 47-0 win over East Newton at Don Johnson Stadium Friday night.

The Wildcat defense looked as strong as they have all season, playing much like they did against Aurora in the season opener.

Cassville never let East Newton past midfield in the first half, recording multiple sacks and shutting down the Patriots' passing game on the outside.

On offense, Cassville worked its running trio of quarterback Gabe Kirk and running backs Leigh Cox and River Phelps, using direct snaps to Cox and Phelps, along with sweep and reverse plays, to confuse the East Newton defense.

Gabe Kirk opened the scoring for Cassville with a 1-yard quarterback sneak in the first quarter. The play capped off a more than 50-yard drive that included the Wildcats' second fourth-down conversion of the evening.

Cassville turned up the scoring after halftime, putting up 27 in the third quarter, all on the ground.

Cox scored from 60 and 21, Kirk found paydirt from 50 and Phelps found the end zone from 64.

The Wildcats wrap up the regular season at home Friday against Seneca at 7 p.m.
