Wildcats drop 3rd straight contest
Cassville falls on the road to Carl Junction, 49-7
The Cassville football team dropped its third straight game on Friday and moved to 2-4 on the season and 2-3 in the Big 8 with a Friday loss to No. 4 Carl Junction on the road, 49-7.
Cassville kept the game close throughout the first quarter, with Carl Junction holding on to a 14-0 lead. Late in the second quarter, Cassville's Leigh Cox picked off an errant Carl Junction pass, which set the stage for the Wildcats' scoring drive.
Quarterback Gabe Kirk broke a 22-yard rush to the 1-yard line, setting up River Phelps to punch in the Wildcats' lone score of the game.
Carl Junction, however, did not allow the game to stay within one score for long, as it returned the ensuing kickoff for a 21-7 lead, then added two more touchdowns to take a 35-7 lead at the half.
Cassville finished the game with 42 rushing attempts for 103 yards, adding 74 yards through the air for 177 total yards of offense. The Wildcats picked up nine first downs and attempted to convert on 16 third-down plays. Cassville punted the ball nine times, averaging 34 yards per punt.
Cassville returns to Wildcat Stadium Friday, hosting Mt. Vernon for homecoming at 7 p.m.
