Purdy volleyball edges Verona for conference win

The Purdy volleyball team defeated Verona in two sets by scores of 25-19 and 26-24 on Thursday for its first conference win.

Purdy was led by Courtney White with 7 kills and 10 digs, Desi Ennes and Layne Skiles finished with 22 blocks each, and Skylar Lakey had 12 assists.

For Verona, Nicole Stevenson recorded 7 kills, Madison Shrum 4 blocks, Tori Pinkly 17 digs and Keiana Guenther 8 assists.

Purdy moves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Verona is 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Southwest Volleyfest begins Saturday

The 31st annual Volleyfest Tournament is Saturday at Southwest High School in Washburn. The 12-team tournament will take place on three courts in two gyms beginning at 9:15 a.m. The teams will be split into three four-team pools in the morning. Bracket and championship will begin in the afternoon. Each team is guaranteed four games and the top four teams will play five matches. Joining the Lady Trojans are teams from Blue Eye, Cassville, Forsyth, Farmington (Ark.), Pea Ridge (Ark.), Gentry (Ark.), Crane, Wheaton, Winona and Verona. Southwest is the defending champ.

Weatherly 
Super Hero 5K set

The fourth annual Doug Weatherly Super Hero 5K run will be Sept. 27 at 9 a.m., beginning and ending at the high school track. Pre-registration forms must be in by Sept. 12 to receive a shirt. Shirts are available for $10, and orders must be in by the deadline. The registration form may be found on the school website at pcschools.net. People can also register the day of the race beginning at 8 a.m. but no shirt will be included. Packet pickup will be Sept. 26 from 5-7 p.m. in the gym entrance at Central Elementary.
