New reporter comes to Cassville Democrat
Johnston brings nearly 4 years of professional experience
Jason Johnston began his duties Aug. 6 as the new reporter at the Cassville Democrat.
Johnston said a desire to return to the Ozarks led to his decision to come to Cassville.
"I came to the Democrat because I have family who lives in the Ozarks, and I thought I could make a difference in Cassville and Barry County," he said.
The appointment was made by Publisher Jacob Brower and Editor Kyle Troutman.
"We're excited to have Jason on board," Troutman said. "He already has a strong journalism background, and I am confident he will do a great job."
Johnston served in the U.S. Navy from July 1998 to August 2006. He was a submarine radioman on the USS Louisville in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and he conducted submarine operations outside of London in Northwood, United Kingdom.
"I was honored to serve my country, just like my grandpa, my dad, my brother and my uncle," he said.
After his military service, Johnston graduated with bachelor's degrees in administrative management and print journalism from Missouri State University. He then became the city and crime reporter at The Emporia (Kan.) Gazette from November 2011 to May 2014.
Johnston lives in Cassville. He likes to travel, listen to jazz and tweet his followers (@jjohnston543).
